About Mahakaleshwar Temple
Mahakaleshwar stands on the bank of the Rudra Sagar lake in Ujjain, one of the seven sacred cities (Sapta Puri) of Hinduism. It is the only one of the twelve Jyotirlingas whose lingam faces south, the direction associated with death and with Yama, and it is worshipped as the lord of time, which is the meaning of Mahakala.
The lingam is considered swayambhu, self-manifested, rather than installed. For centuries Ujjain was also a seat of astronomy: the Prime Meridian of Hindu astronomers is traditionally drawn through the city, and the Simhastha Kumbh Mela is held on the nearby Kshipra river every twelve years.

The temple was destroyed by Iltutmish in 1234 CE and rebuilt by the Maratha Ranoji Shinde in 1734. Ujjain is one of the seven sacred cities of Hinduism.
