History of Shri Mata Naina Devi Ji Shaktipeeth

According to the Devi Bhagavata Purana, when Lord Vishnu dismembered Sati's body with his Sudarshana Chakra, her right eye fell at this hilltop in the Sivaliks, sanctifying it as a Shakti Peeth. The shrine was rediscovered in the 8th century CE by a Gujjar cowherd boy named Naina, whose cow repeatedly showered milk on a particular stone at the hilltop; the Goddess appeared in his dream and identified the stone as her pindi. Raja Bir Chand of the Bilaspur (Kahlur) kingdom built the original temple at that spot, naming it after the boy. The temple is also called Mahishapeeth in honour of the Goddess's victory over the demon Mahishasur. The current hilltop complex was substantially rebuilt and expanded in the 20th century and remains under the management of a temple trust. The shrine was the site of a 3 August 2008 stampede that killed 123 pilgrims during Sawan — the worst crowd-safety incident in the shrine's modern history.
