Vaishno Devi Temple

The Vaishno Devi shrine lies in a natural cave on the Trikuta hills, about 1,600 metres above sea level, near Katra in Jammu and Kashmir. It is among the most visited pilgrimage sites in India. The goddess is worshipped not as a carved image but as three natural rock formations (pindis) representing Maha Kali, Maha Lakshmi and Maha Saraswati.

The legend tells of a young girl, Vaishnavi, a devotee of Vishnu who was pursued by the tantrik Bhairon Nath and took refuge in the cave. Pilgrims commonly stop at the Bhairon temple on the hilltop after the main darshan, which completes the pilgrimage in the traditional order.

The current path was mapped by the Dharmarth Trust in the 19th century. Traditionally the goddess is said to have taken refuge in the cave during her flight from the demon Bhairon.

The shrine itself is a natural cave. Pilgrims pass through a narrow cave passage, now supplemented by a wider modern entrance, to reach the sanctum, where the three pindis are seen under a canopy.

The route from Katra is a paved, covered track with rest stops, food stalls and medical posts. Ardh Kuwari, midway, has its own small cave associated with the goddess. The Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board, set up by law in 1986, manages the pilgrimage and the facilities.

Pilgrims chant "Jai Mata Di" as they climb. Darshan is open through the day and night, interrupted by the two daily aartis, which are performed at dawn and dusk. Devotees offer coconuts, red chunari and prasad.

Navaratri brings the largest crowds, and the shrine is decorated with flowers. Many devotees fulfil a vow by walking barefoot or by making the climb more than once.

Every pilgrim needs a yatra registration slip, which can be obtained free of charge at Katra or online through the Shrine Board's official website. Plan on six to eight hours for the climb, or take a pony, palanquin or battery car for part of the way. A helicopter service runs from Katra to Sanjichhat.

Katra has a railway station with direct trains from Delhi and other cities. Carry warm clothes in winter, wear comfortable shoes, and note that leather items and mobile phones are restricted near the sanctum.
