The hillock (gudda in Kannada) hosting the main deity is traditionally believed to have formed from a heap of ragi (finger millet). According to local legend, a devout woman named Sudharma offered freshly harvested ragi to the holy trinity as alms, and the offering miraculously turned into the hillock. The trinity, pleased with her devotion, granted her darshan and themselves became stones at the site. A small Hanuman shrine was established in 1965; the temple was formally established in 1969 and registered in 1972. Administered by the Ragiguddada Sri Prasanna Anjaneyaswamy Bhaktha Mandali Trust, originally formed in 1996 and reconstituted in 2017.
