About Shree Siddhivinayak Temple
Shree Siddhivinayak is Mumbai's best-known Ganesha temple, in the Prabhadevi neighbourhood close to Dadar. The name refers to Ganesha as the bestower of siddhi, success or fulfilment, and the temple is visited by people from every walk of life, from film stars to daily commuters, before exams, journeys and new ventures.
The image is unusual. Most Ganesha idols have the trunk curving to the left; here it turns to the right, a form associated with a stricter and more powerful tradition of worship. The idol is carved from a single black stone and shows the deity with four arms, holding a lotus, an axe, a bowl of modaks and a rosary, with Riddhi and Siddhi carved on either side.
History of Shree Siddhivinayak Temple
Built by the contractor Laxman Vithu and Deubai Patil in 1801. The current temple structure was rebuilt in the 1990s.

The temple was originally a small structure built in 1801, and the present building, completed in the 1990s, is a multi-storey modern temple with a prominent central dome. The inner sanctum's wooden doors are carved with images of the Ashtavinayak, the eight Ganesha shrines of Maharashtra.
The sanctum's inner ceiling is covered with gold plating, and the main hall has been designed to handle large crowds along covered queue lines.

Tuesday, the day sacred to Ganesha, is the busiest, and queues on Tuesdays can stretch into the streets. Devotees offer red hibiscus flowers, durva grass and modaks.
Angarki Chaturthi, when the fourth day of the lunar fortnight falls on a Tuesday, is considered especially auspicious here. Ganesh Chaturthi and Maghi Ganesh Jayanti mark the biggest festivals, with extended hours of darshan.
