Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple

Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple occupies the island of Srirangam, between the Kaveri and its branch the Kollidam, near Tiruchirappalli. It is the first and foremost of the 108 Divya Desams of the Sri Vaishnava tradition and is often described as the largest functioning Hindu temple complex in the world, covering about 156 acres.

The presiding deity is Ranganatha, a form of Vishnu reclining on the serpent Adisesha, facing south. The temple tradition says that the image was given to Vibhishana, the brother of Ravana, who was carrying it to Lanka but could not lift it after setting it down here, so it stayed. The philosopher Ramanuja lived and taught here, and his preserved body is enshrined in the temple.

Continuously expanded from the Chola period through the Vijayanagara and Nayak reigns. The Rajagopuram at the southern entrance is one of the tallest in Asia at 73 metres.

The complex has seven concentric walled enclosures, with 21 gopurams, and the outer ones are as large as a small town with shops and homes. The southern Rajagopuram, completed in 1987, is about 73 metres tall and is among the tallest gateway towers in Asia.

Inside, the Thousand-Pillared Hall (Ayirakkal Mandapam) and the Garuda Mandapam are among the finest of the carved halls, and the sanctum is topped by a golden vimana. The building was expanded over many centuries by the Cholas, Pandyas, Hoysalas, Vijayanagara and Nayak rulers.

The daily worship follows the Pancharatra tradition, with the deity woken, bathed, dressed and fed through the day. The singing of the Divya Prabandham, the hymns of the Alvar saints, is part of the ritual calendar.

The Vaikuntha Ekadasi festival in December or January, when the northern gate, the Paramapada Vasal, is opened and devotees pass through it, is the temple's largest event and draws vast crowds over 21 days. Panguni Uttiram and the Brahmotsavam are other major occasions.

The outer enclosures are open to everyone, and the inner areas require a ticket for a special entry, although regular darshan is free. Dress modestly, and leave footwear at the entrance. Giving two to three hours lets you see the main sights.
