Venkateswara Temple

The Venkateswara Temple at Tirumala is set on the seventh of the seven hills of the Seshachalam range, above Tirupati in Andhra Pradesh. It is among the most visited religious sites in the world. The deity, Venkateswara, also called Balaji and Srinivasa, is worshipped as a form of Vishnu who is believed to have taken up residence on the hill for the Kali Yuga.

Devotees commonly make vows to the deity and return to fulfil them, often by offering their hair, a practice known as tonsure. The temple's funds are managed by the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD), which also runs schools, hospitals and large free-meal kitchens.

Poems of the Alvars from the 5th–9th centuries CE already celebrate the shrine. Successive Pallava, Chola, Pandya, and Vijayanagara rulers endowed the temple.

The main shrine sits inside nested enclosure walls and is entered through a gateway tower, the Mahadwaram. Over the sanctum rises the Ananda Nilayam vimana, its gilded dome among the best known sights of the hill. The temple follows the Vaikhanasa tradition of Vaishnava ritual.

The Swami Pushkarini, a sacred tank beside the temple, is where pilgrims bathe before entering. Inscriptions on the walls, many in Tamil and Telugu, record gifts from Pallava, Chola and Vijayanagara rulers.

The daily service begins well before dawn with the Suprabhatam and runs through a series of abhishekams, alankarams and offerings until the closing service at night. Weekly and annual services include special abhishekams on Fridays and the nine-day Brahmotsavam each autumn.

The temple's laddu prasad is a signature offering made in the temple's kitchen and holds a geographical indication tag. Vaikuntha Ekadasi, when a special inner passage is opened for devotees, draws some of the largest crowds of the year.

Darshan queues can run from a few hours to over a day in busy periods. Book timed darshan slots through the TTD's official website, and be wary of anyone offering tickets outside it. Dress modestly, and expect to leave phones and bags in lockers.

Pilgrims can walk up to Tirumala from Tirupati by the Alipiri path or the shorter Srivari Mettu path, or take a bus or taxi. Tirupati itself has the Govindaraja Swamy Temple and the Sri Padmavathi Temple at Tiruchanoor.
