Built in the 8th-9th century CE (most commonly dated late 8th / early 9th century; art historian Hermann Goetz and Madanjeet Singh argued for an 11th-century date, possibly linked to Pala sculptors who fled Mahmud of Ghazni's sack of Kannauj in 1018 CE). French archaeologist Odette Viennot dated it to the reign of Lalitaditya of Kashmir. The temple is built on the ancient Mandi-Kullu-Himalayan trade route beside the Beas River at historic Bajaura ("bazaar"). Its outer walls are richly carved with pot-and-foliage bands, serpent / kinnar / bird / elephant motifs, and four corner sculptures (Ganesha, Vishnu, eight-armed Durga, and a fourth corner deity) — with smaller minarets bearing bhadramukhas showing Shiva's three faces. Declared a protected monument by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI code N-HP-28).
