History of Gauri Shankar Temple, Naggar
The temple is a 9th-10th century CE stone temple built in the Nagara style and is one of the oldest religious structures in Naggar, predating the 15th-16th century Naggar Castle around which the Kullu Rajas later developed their capital. The temple was built during the early-medieval flowering of hill-state temple architecture in the Beas valley, and is associated with both the Shaiva and Shakta traditions since its presiding deity is Shiva together with his consort Gauri/Parvati. The temple sits in a paved courtyard immediately below the main Naggar Castle, where the Kullu Rajas used it as one of the royal shrine-complexes. After the British period the surrounding castle became a dak bungalow and later a heritage hotel run by HPTDC (since 1978), while the temple itself was taken under the protection of the ASI's Shimla Circle as a centrally protected monument (code N-HP-30). It remains an active place of worship and a key heritage site within the Naggar Castle precinct.
